Right now most people are worried about the future, and a lot of that worry might even be subconscious, and it has consequences to our health. But we can mitigate it!
Are any of these symptoms familiar to you? We can put stress symptoms in to 4 categories:
Cognitive Symptoms: Memory problems, inability to concentrate, poor judgment, seeing only the negative, anxious or racing thoughts, constant worrying
Emotional Symptoms: Moodiness, irritability or short temper, agitation, inability to relax, feeling overwhelmed, sense of loneliness and isolation, depression or general unhappiness
Physical Symptoms: Aches and pains, diarrhea or constipation, nausea, dizziness, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, loss of sex drive, frequent colds
Behavioural Symptoms: Eating more or less, sleeping too much or too little, isolating yourself from others, procrastinating or neglecting responsibilities, using alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, sugar to relax, nervous habits (e.g. nail biting, pacing)
Let’s be honest, we can all associate with some of these symptoms, but are there steps we can take to mitigate them, not only to reduce symptoms but also to lessen the damaging effect to the body?
The Effect of Stress on The Adrenal Glands: This is a serious issue because insufficient adrenal function can cause damage to:
- Hair: Adrenal insufficiency may occur in conjunction with alopecia
- Immune system: It may suppress the immune system
- Metabolism: The adrenals of people with chronic fatigue system are on average, only 50% of the normal size
Adrenal Insufficiency may also cause:
- Low blood sugar, impaired liver function, fatigue, salt cravings, low blood pressure, anxiety, poor concentration, depression, excessive drowsiness, insomnia, memory impairment
Vitamins and Minerals That Support The Adrenals:
- Vitamin A may improve the function of the adrenal glands
- Vitamin B5 may activate the adrenal glands and may “revive” exhausted adrenal glands
- Vitamin C is essential for the function of the adrenals, which contain about 30 mg of vitamin C, the second highest concentration of vitamin C of any component of the body
- Vitamin E: the adrenal glands contain 132 mcg of vitamin E per gram
- Calcium supports the healthy function of the adrenal glands
- Magnesium supports the healthy function of the adrenal glands
- Zinc supports the healthy function of the adrenal glands
- GTF chromium concentrates in the adrenal glands
- Vanadium concentrates in the adrenal glands
It was important to give some attention to adrenal insufficiency because it does have widespread consequences, but getting back to Stress in general, we can associate the following Vitamins and Minerals to stress:
- Iron: Excessive stress may occur as a result of Iron deficiency.
- Magnesium may alleviate stress (by improving the function of the adrenal glands and by counteracting stress-induced magnesium depletion)
- Phosphorus may alleviate stress
- Zinc deficiency may lower the body's adaptability to stress
- Vitamin B3 -an adjunct for the treatment of excessive stress
- Vitamin B5 may protect against the toxic effects of excessive stress (by facilitating production of corticosteroid adrenal hormones)
- Vitamin B6 may protect the body against the toxic effects of excessive stress
- Vitamin C may protect against the toxic effects of stress and may lower the production of cortisol by the adrenal glands during periods of stress
- Vitamin E may help to reduce the toxic effects associated with excessive stress
