In recent months I have focused on the importance of a robust immune system, but let’s look at ways to keep the body free on nasty toxins which, as it happens, is relevant to a strong immune system anyway!
What Is The Role Of Antioxidants? Antioxidants “scavenge” and help “mop-up” free radicals
We live in a world where free radicals can come from many sources and contribute to deterioration of health. Free radicals are all around us from pollutants, drugs, heavy metals, radiation, saturated and trans-fatty acids, strenuous exercise, mitochondrial dysfunction and smoking. These may result in damage to membrane lipids, proteins, nucleic acids and carbohydrates, which can result in cancer, neurological diseases, lung diseases, diabetes, vascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, ageing and eye disease. Each day, each cell in the human body endures 104 hits from free radicals—that is about three hundred trillion hits to the body per day!
Antioxidants Protect Us From Disease: Free radical damage to the skin causes a more aged appearance. Consuming foods with high antioxidant qualities is linked to a decrease in cancer and heart disease, and these antioxidants also help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. In fact healthy “live” foods like fruit, vegetables nuts and pulses are associated with a decrease in risk of most chronic diseases. But supplements that purport to contain the same nutrients as these foods simply don’t provide the same protection against these chronic diseases, and in some cases can even exacerbate them, as demonstrated in several large clinical trials.
Which Are The Most Important Antioxidants? We’ve put them all in 1 product:
-
Vitamin C
-
Vitamin E
-
Co-Enzyme Q10
-
Zinc
-
Selenium
Food Antioxidants Are Not The Same As Those In Supplements: This is where the confusion lies. Antioxidants in supplements are fundamentally different to antioxidants in foods and Foodstate supplements. In addition, taking more of these chemical supplements is not a solution to achieving better results. Foodstate antioxidants can claim the same benefits as natural food antioxidants.
-
An Efficient Gut: Fundamental to any effort to improve your health, is improving the function of your gut. Digesting food efficiently lessens the toxic load on the body. There are 2 products to recommend here:
-
Probiotic E505: Contains 8 healthy strains of probiotic bacteria and 1 strain of pre-biotic that. Probiotics also help remove candida from the gut, help reduce inflammation and generally improve the efficiency of the digestive process. It also has a soothing effect on the gut if you are prone to discomfort and helps you be more “regular”
-
Caprylic Acid is a healthy fat and multi-herbal product that helps to eliminate candida from the gut and cleanses the digestive track, promoting the health of the colon
Liver: The human liver processes 3 pints of blood per minute. It is remarkably good at regenerating itself but needs a bit if help to remain efficient. Not one cell in your liver today will be there in 90 days time – you would have completely rebuilt it! The liver has considerable influence over the quality of fluids circulating around the body delivering nutrients and removing waste, made even more important today when we consider our daily bombardment of toxins
Diet Is Important: The liver is best supported by a diet rich in organic, unrefined and unprocessed foods, in particular fruits and veg. We need 4 pints of plain bottled or filtered water daily
Milk Thistle: This herb is known to have a protective effect on the liver
Antioxidants: Once again this group of nutrients is important in its role of binding to and removing toxins from the body, including from the liver
Blood:
Bromelain is helpful in reducing the harmful substances that contribute to cardiovascular disease. It does this by breaking down Fibrin in the blood vessels, which is a web-like structure that binds together to form collections of fibrinogen, causing arterial blockage. Bromelain is a digestive enzyme sourced from the core of a pineapple, and also supports the function of the gut
Diet: Ultimately, your diet will influence your health more than anything else. Foodstate supplements are very helpful at improving your health in many respects, but nothing quite replaces a healthy diet – and the focus should not just be on your healthy food choices, but also on your unhealthy ones. Plenty of “live” food comprising fresh (organic if possible) fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and pulses are a given. If I could offer 1 single piece of advice, it would be to eliminate refined sugar from your diet (and sweeteners!). Here’s why:
-
In tests, rats that had sugar removed from their diets lived twice as long
-
It increases the risk of heart disease
-
It suppresses the immunity and increases the risk of breast and colon cancer
-
It disrupts the digestion and is a likely contributor to Crohn’s and Ulcerative colitis
-
It is likely to increase ADHT, autism, depression, drowsiness and affects spatial awareness
-
It causes a temporary rise in blood sugar and can lead to Diabetes
-
It increases undesirable LDL cholesterol
-
It causes obesity and increases the accumulation of visceral fat
-
It causes the excretion of many vitamins and minerals
-
It causes tooth decay and accelerates wrinkly skin
